  • What is the difference between a patio and a pergola?

A patio generally refers to a covered outdoor area designed for entertaining and weather protection, while a pergola is often an open or partially shaded structure. Pergolas may feature open battens, lattice or climbing plants for filtered shade, whereas patios usually use solid roofing for year-round protection. Choosing between them depends on whether you want full shade, filtered light or extra weatherproofing.

  • What materials are best for long-lasting patios or pergolas?

Steel framing and roofing are popular for their durability, low-maintenance and ability to withstand strong sun, wind and rain. Modern steel roofing panels offer good thermal performance and long-term colour retention, while insulated panels can improve comfort in hot weather. Timber can also be used for aesthetic appeal but generally requires more maintenance to prevent warping or weather damage.

  • Do patios and pergolas need council approval?

Approval requirements vary depending on the size, height, location and materials used. Many small pergolas may be exempt, but larger structures, attached designs or roofing additions often require formal approval. Councils typically assess factors such as boundary setbacks, structural integrity, stormwater management and how the structure affects neighbouring properties. Checking requirements early helps avoid delays during the build.
